ST EMILION · RIGHT BANK

St Emilion is one of Bordeaux's largest producing appellations, producing more wine than Listrac, Moulis, St Estèphe, Pauillac, St Julien and Margaux put together. St Emilion has been producing wine for longer than the Médoc but its lack of accessibility to Bordeaux's port and market restricted exports to mainland Europe and the region never originally enjoyed the commercial success which funded the great châteaux of the Left Bank. St Emilion itself is the prettiest of Bordeaux's wine towns, perched on top of the steep limestone slopes upon which many of the region's finest vineyards are situated. However, more than half of the appellation's vineyards lie on the plain between the town and the Dordogne River on sandy, alluvial soils with a sprinkling of gravel. Further diversity is added by a small, complex gravel bed to the north-east of the region on the border with Pomerol. Atypically for St Emilion, this allows Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon to prosper and defines the personality of the great wines such as Ch. Cheval Blanc. In recent years there has been an explosion of experimentation and evolution, leading to the rise of the "garagistes", producers of deeply concentrated wines made in very small quantities and offered at high prices. The appellation is also surrounded by four "satellite" appellations, Montagne, Lussac, Puisseguin and St. Georges, which enjoy a family similarity but not the complexity of the best wines. St Emilion was first officially classified in 1954 and is the most meritocratic classification system in Bordeaux, as it is regularly amended. The latest revision was in 2012.

2016 CHÂTEAU ANGELUS
· ST. EMILION · PREMIER GRAND CRU CLASSÉ A
+104196 · 3x750ml
Website

60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc.
With a very dark inky colour, the 2016 Chateau Angelus displays on the nose sensual and dark notes of cedar and bitter orange peels, and a powerful sensation of freshness and tension. Aeration in the glass develops luscious (but not excessive) fruit notes of ripe blackberries and blueberries, with a bright and inviting purity. Smelling this wine is like biting into the ripe grape. Yet, at this time, the nose still hides the richness and depth that this wine will one day provide. The palate is precise and dynamic, with a meaty mid-palate, and silky with creamy tannins. The structure of the wine is impressive, with excellent balance, and it nearly seems to be drinkable now. The whole is impressive and superb, making Angelus among the most exceptional wines of the vintage, with extraordinary ageing potential.
Chateau Angelus is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes. Chateau Angelus is also good when matched with Asian dishes, rich fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta.

The wine of Château Barde-Haut offer an admirably balanced dialogue between power and freshness, resulting in a product of rare elegance. A good drop of damson and black cherry fruits right up front and holds its line while the more austere tannins come in towards the finish. Expertly extracted, self-contained right now, firm fruits that don't dip through the mid palate alongside a glossy wash of liquorice, black chocolate, sage and anis. This is clearly going to age well. 60% new oak for ageing. Owned by Hélène Garcin-Leveque, this is located right next to Troplong Mondot.

+893372 · 12x750ml
Website

69% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc.
Château Berliquet 2020 is a wine with a strong personality. Fresh pink grapefruit notes immediately burst through the nose and are soon interwoven with a deep terroir structure, rooted in the clay. The wine is dense, a quality also associated with its tannins, polished by the wine’s ageing. Floral vegetation expresses itself through a complexity of South of France aromas: pine, slightly sweet gorse flower, sap and broom. A hallmark of the terroir and the vintage: a mineral, almost saline finish with a long, drawn-out aftertaste.

Malolactic fermentation is conducted in new, French oak barrels. The wine of Lynsolence is aged in 100% new, French, oak barrels for an average of 18 months before bottling.
Chateau Lynsolence is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift. Chateau Laroque is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised and grilled dishes.

From the very beginning of the tasting of this very fine vintage, we find the identity of Cha^teau Tour Saint Christophe. Elegant aromas of blackberry and blueberry are combined with delicate floral notes and small chalky touches. The powerful structure is carried by a beautiful acidity which brings a fresh and sappy side. Aromas of stewed fruit and black pepper complete the palate, which extends to saline notes.

+848134 · 6x750ml
Website

90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Purple/black at the core, more viscous than any other wine that I have tasted thus far and another one of those wines where the colour seems almost to have been dripped in from a pipette and has yet to set – if one swirls the glass, one imagines the colour will stay put! An utterly sumptuous and entirely hedonistic nose of violets and rose petals, confit and Palma violets and candied rose petals, black cherries, concentrated blue berry compote, the graphite rods from the reactor core, tar and baked earth, tobacco leaf, cedar (with more to come) and vanilla. The palate is no less hedonistic, with silky soft and ultra-fine-grained tannins, masses of deep, dark rich cherry and berry fruit, black forest gateau and a rolling-rippling sappy fresh juicy fruit that helps hold this all in some kind of balance, strange though it might seem to think that any kind of balance could be struck. There’s something a little mad and chaotic about this, but it has its own sense of integrity and harmony. Not perhaps for the faint-hearted; but wondrous in all its excess.
Valandraud is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift. Purplish purple. Finesse and elegance are the first two adjectives that come to mind when smelling the bouquet of Clos Fourtet 2019. Inviting notes of raspberries and cherries as well as floral nuances. Touch of black pepper and liquorice. On the palate the wine is marked by freshness. It has finesse, length and displays a beautiful tannic structure. The tannins are tight, perfectly integrated and in phase with the acid structure. A Clos Fourtet built on finesse and persistence. Very nice success.

2019 LE PETIT CHEVAL BLANC
· ST. EMILION GC   BORDEAUX BLANC
+881228 · 6x750ml
Website

79% Sauvignon Blanc, 21% Semillon.
The colour is bright, limpid, brilliant, a beautiful yellow-green. The first nose, subtle and delicate, is mainly dominated by notes of flowers, acacia and lime tree. By airing it, the bouquet becomes more complex and develops various aromatic families, citrus fruits, white-fleshed fruits such as peach, pear or apricot, and mineral notes, with an aromatic intensity that gradually becomes more refined. The attack on the palate is fresh and straightforward thanks to a beautiful acidity that guides the tasting. The density, fat and volume are slowly built up on the mid-palate. The finish, very long and elegant, is enhanced by the beautiful bitters, now the signature of this Petit Cheval white wine.
Goes well with appetizer course of shellfish, oysters (especially), or cheese and fruit. Chateau Cheval Blanc is also good when matched with Asian dishes, rich fish courses like tuna, mushrooms and pasta.

80% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon.
A particularly successful vintage for Le Petit Cheval Blanc, with bergamot, citrus, slightly grapefruit, fruity touches of pear, white flesh fruit. Freshness and a mineral note that probably comes from the ageing in large vessels. The nose is bright, fresh, precise, and clean. The palate is vibrant, with a beautiful attack, freshness, tension, a relatively strong acidity, salinity, and nice bitters that lengthen the mouth, and which compose with a beautiful volume, wide, creamy. A very nice balance for a wine that is already accessible, from its youngest age.
