SAINT-JULIEN · LEFT BANK

St Julien is the smallest of the "Big Four" Médoc communes. Although without any First Growths, St Julien is recognised to be the most consistent of the main communes, with several châteaux turning out impressive wines year after year. St Julien itself is much more of a village than Pauillac and almost all of the notable properties lie to its south. Its most northerly château is Ch. Léoville-Las-Cases, whose vineyards actually adjoin those of Latour in Pauillac but to the south suitable vineyard land gives way to arable farming and livestock until the Margaux appellation is reached. The soil is gravelly and finer than Pauillac, without the iron content which gives Pauillac its stature. The homogeneous soils in the vineyards (which extend over a relatively small area of just over 700 hectares) give the commune a unfied character The wines can be assessed as much by texture as flavour and there is a sleek wholesome character to the best. Elegance, harmony and perfect balance and weight with hints of cassis and cedar are what epitomise classic St Juliens. At their very best they combine Margaux elegance and refinement with Pauillac power and substance. Ch. Léoville-Las-Cases produces arguably the most sought-after St Julien and in any re-assement of the 1855 Classification it would almost certainly warrant being elevated to first growth status.

The wines are less powerful than the previous three vintages, but have a good structure and balance. The purity of the fruit is not impaired by any hint of under-ripeness and offers a beautiful classical style. Good structure on the palate, offering lovely Cabernets that have matured very gradually in this classic vintage with a more Atlantic feel. A nice acidity underpins the harmonious finish.
Chateau Branaire Ducru is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift. Young vintages can be decanted for 2-3 hours. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau Branaire Ducru is best served with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, stewed and grilled dishes. Branaire Ducru is also good when served with Asian dishes, hearty seafood or fish like tuna, mushrooms, pasta and cheese.

The nose, which is already very expressive, shows a nice complexity of ripe fruit, well balanced by fresher notes. The intensity of the bouquet develops with aeration and the oak is already well integrated. The first impression on the palate is one of silky roundness with impressive volume, overlaying extremely fine tannins. The wine develops slowly and gradually on the palate, following its logical path to a voluptuous mid-palate with beautiful density: always refined – never overpowering.

Ink color, a pure and concentrated nose with a hint of ink dry opening with notes of fresh violet, crème de cassis, blackberry, and blueberry, followed by exotic spices, a hint cedar and cigar box, and a spark of smoky graphite. The 2020 is a vintage of contrasts, a vine grower’s vintage. We harvested the smallest crop in 30 years. The extraordinary freshness in this wine, produced in the hottest vintage in modern history, is real proof of the buffer effect of our terroir. The precision of the fruit transpires, with lovely notes of black cherry, blackcurrant, and liquorice. The tense tannic structure is reminiscent of the great 2010, with a more creamy, smoother mid-palate. A truly classic vintage that will be enjoyable earlier yet maintain a remarkable ageing potential. A focused, finely tuned, expressive wine showing great purity.

The grand vin in 2010 at Leoville Las Cases is outstanding and one of the top wines on the Left Bank this year, but it is a wine of immense power and concentration and will need a long time in the cellar to fully unfold. At 13.7% alcohol, the wine is ripe, but certainly not overripe and most impressive in its purity and focus, as it offers up a very, very deep nose of sappy black cherries, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, espresso, a great base of soil (particularly for this vintage), smoke and plenty of spicy new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very powerful, with rippling muscles, ripe, well-integrated tannins, great depth at the core and a very, very long, focused and slightly heady finish. This is a big-boned and very ripe Las Cases that should last at least 75 years, and I like it better than the also very powerful 2009, as the 2010 seems to have harnessed its power much better and integrated it into a more seamless whole. The 2010 is a beautifully made wine.
Best served with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised and grilled dishes.

“Surprise is the test of true courage”, Aristotle. Our teams have had courage in spades in the face of the increasingly unpredictable nature of the vintage. Keeping on the path of excellence with patience and dedication, interpreting with expertise and experience what nature entrusts to us. Yet willing to follow our intuition, to take risks, to adapt, to take up challenges every day and to win battles. This is precisely what being a winemaker is all about. And this year, we have experienced all its contours to be rewarded with the pleasure of a fresher style vintage letting ourselves be captivated by its purity of fruit and elegance.

Undeniably, Talbot is one of the most famous Médoc wines. Having been in the same family for more than a century, this estate with more than one hundred hectares of vines produces wine that is recognized for the consistent quality of its vintages. ‘For many, Talbot embodies the ideal Saint Julien, a generous bouquet, extremely stable and dependable during aging,’ emphasize Bettane and Desseauve in their Guide to French Wines. It’s true, Talbot is a champion of longevity; even young Talbot is pleasant and rounded, always characterized by silky, mild and very civilized tannins. Talbot possesses an expansive character. It’s never withdrawn into itself and has the courtesy of being in a good mood every day. It’s a racy wine, with complex marks of Havana tobacco and licorice, classically delicious without ever the slightest hint of austerity.
