ST. ESTÈPHE · LEFT BANK

St Estèphe is the northernmost of the most important communes of the Médoc and borders Pauillac on its southernmost border, with only a gully and stream separates it from Ch. Lafite. To the north lies the Bas-Médoc. St Estèphe is defined by the depth of its gravel, which is ubiquitous but of varying depths and occasionally very shallow, when clay predominates. This keeps the soil cooler and wetter than its counterparts so that the wines can appear fresh in lighter vintages, but superbly successful in hot, dry years. The best châteauxs in the south of the commune have the deepest soil and the thickest gravel. St Estèphe is the least gravelly of main Médoc communes and in the north of the commune the vineyards are heavier and more clay-based leading to a rustic style of wine being produced. The wines can appear austere in youth with a discernable ferric note at some châteaux, but the best typically display good depth of colour, pronounced acidity an tannins in youth and are exceptionally long-lived. At their best, they are the equal of almost any Bordeaux. The well-regarded St Estèphe co-operative controls the production of about half the appellation.

2020 CHÂTEAU LAFON-ROCHET
· ST. ESTÈPHE AOC   4TH GRAND CRU CLASSE
+866975 · 12x750ml
Website

61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.
Dark fruit, profound, mineral, cool flowers, mint. On the palate, a fruit concentrate without heaviness, excellent tannin quality, lots of freshness, the wood is perfectly integrated, all elements are in great harmony. Spicy, fresh finish. An excellent Lafon-Rochet.
Chateau Lafon Rochet is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift. Young vintages can be decanted for 1-2 hours. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Lafon Rochet is best served with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes.

· ST. ESTÈPHE AOC   4TH GRAND CRU CLASSE

Website

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot.
CLifted, floral and fresh on the nose. Some dark- and red-berry notes as well. Aromatically already intriguing. Smooth attack then plenty of juice, highlighted by the marked acidity (possibly due to a high percentage of Petit Verdot) and freshness. Firm tannic structure, the finish long, steely, and dry. An almost old-style classic, natural and without artifice.
Meyney is best served with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes. Chateau Meyney is also good with Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta

Château Meyney’s vineyard is planted of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, on a perfectly-drained gravel soil that provides ideal conditions for grapes ripening. This unusually high share of Petit Verdot explains a particular trait of the wines, which regularly show notes of leather and musk after a period of time. The wine is full-bodied, well-rounded, and structured. After ageing, the wine displays the remarkable charm of the best Saint-Estèphe: complexity, balance, and harmony.

61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.
Smooth, nuanced and deep. Sustained by vivaciousness coming from high acidity. The barrel sample reminded me of the 2005 en primeur, but with more charm. It conveyed 2009 like ripeness, but with greater freshness. Nuance and power, full bodied, and a long finish.
Great with lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised and grilled dishes.

100% Furmint.
ln 2009, Michel Reybier from Chateau Cos d'Estournel in St. Estephe, became the new owner of this historic winery. Fantastic fruity, lightness, airiness almost. It comes from a rich wine, but thanks to 2010, it has incredible refreshing, vibrant acids. Its aroma and taste include fresh pineapple, citrus, white flowers. A vibrant, vibrant, wonderful Aszú wine.
Attractive companion of foie gras or even some spicy oriental food. Goes well with creamy, nutty or fruity desserts, blue cheese.
