ST. ESTÈPHE · LEFT BANK

St Estèphe is the northernmost of the most important communes of the Médoc and borders Pauillac on its southernmost border, with only a gully and stream separates it from Ch. Lafite. To the north lies the Bas-Médoc. St Estèphe is defined by the depth of its gravel, which is ubiquitous but of varying depths and occasionally very shallow, when clay predominates. This keeps the soil cooler and wetter than its counterparts so that the wines can appear fresh in lighter vintages, but superbly successful in hot, dry years. The best châteauxs in the south of the commune have the deepest soil and the thickest gravel. St Estèphe is the least gravelly of main Médoc communes and in the north of the commune the vineyards are heavier and more clay-based leading to a rustic style of wine being produced. The wines can appear austere in youth with a discernable ferric note at some châteaux, but the best typically display good depth of colour, pronounced acidity an tannins in youth and are exceptionally long-lived. At their best, they are the equal of almost any Bordeaux. The well-regarded St Estèphe co-operative controls the production of about half the appellation.

The 2022 Cos d'Estournel has an overtly floral nose with wilted violets infusing the precocious yet controlled black fruit. There's fine delineation, impressive focus and energy. The palate is smooth and silky on the entry with pliant, sculpted tannins. The acidity is well judged (3.79pH) with white pepper and a graphite element toward the persistent finish. Quintessential Cos d'Estournel, this wine will mature for many years, although the jury's out on whether it will surpass triumphs like the 2016 or 2019/20.
The wines from Chateau Cos d’Estournel are best served at 17-18 degrees Celsius. As they continue to warm up in the glass, they will release their full palette of aromas and reveal their most subtle, delicate nuances. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. On the palate its tannins are exquisite—silky and seductive—and it offers the sophistication of a truly great wine with the body of an exceptional Cos d’Estournel. Its aromas are spicy and wonderfully fresh, offering a fine balance between acidity and fruit. Opulent without being overly imposing, with a very long finish, it is a vintage with great cellaring potential.

The 2022 Château de Pez has a very pure nose with something of a Burgundian allure: a mélange of blue and black fruit, wilted violet and graphite borrowed from down in Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins. This Rouzaud/Roederer owned St Estèphe chateau is managed by Nicolas Glumineau and the Pichon Lalande team. Alas, hail has reduced volumes here by 45%. There's lots of material here with good quality fruit tannins. Quite robust and foursquare on the evidence of this tasting.

The 2021 vintage wasn’t an easy one for second wines, but this really delivers. The fact that St Estèphe received less rain at the end of September than further south in the Médoc seems to have helped the property gain a very homogenous maturity across the board. That shines through in this wine. It is sapid, but with intensity and a fine, spicy, charcoal edge. It captures the linear appeal of the appellation but without any weak points. As with the grand vin, at its own level, this is rather special. Drink 2024-2034.
