MARGAUX · LEFT BANK

If Pauillac can be seen as the bastion of "traditional" Red Bordeaux, then Margaux represents its other facet in producing wines that are among the most sensual and alluring of Bordeaux. It is the biggest commune in the Médoc encompassing the communes of Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac andLabaude in addition to Margaux itself It is located in the centre of the Haut-Médoc, and is the closest of the important communes to the city of Bordeaux. The soils in Margaux are the lightest and most gravelly of the Médoc with some of the soils also containing a high percentage of sand. Vineyards located in Cantenac and Margaux make up the core of the appelation with the best vineyard sites being located on well-drained slopes. It is these lighter, well-drained soils which give Margaux its deft touch and silky perfumes. Further from the water there is a greater clay content and the wines are less dramatically perfumed. Margaux is the most diffuse of all the Médoc appelations with a reputation for scaling the heights with irreproachable wines such as Ch. Margaux and Ch. Palmer, but also plumbing the depths, with too many other Château not fulfilling their potential. There has been an upward shift in recent years, but the appellation cannot yet boast the reliability of St Julien. However the finest Margaux are exquisitely perfumed and and are models of refinement and subtlety which have few parallels in Bordeaux.

The toasty aromas of Brane-Cantenac are more pronounced this year. But on the palate, it still delivers a matured and sophisticated expression as usual, without any trace of the 2021's character. I really like the texture of the tannins, possesive yet ingenious, combined with a mellow density on the taste buds. This is not only a credit to R'pulse maceration, but also to the winery's near-frenzied selection of the press wine. Christophe, the technical director, told me that they have blended the best 12.7% from more than 100 samples into the Grand Vin, and eventually resulted in this surprising Brane-Cantenac 2021.

Deep and dark color with purplish reflections. The nose is intense. It harmoniously combines woody, spicy, fruity, and floral notes and reveals its great complexity when aired. The attack is large, the mid-palate is dense and has a high sweetness. The wine is concentrated and chewy. It is beautifully balanced. Dominated by the Cabernets this year (the blend is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot), this is a lovely fleshy attractive wine with classic aromas of blackcurrant, wildflowers, and a touch of liquorice. On the palate, the wine is round and smooth with good blackcurrant sweetness; some spice and lively, prickly tannins which are structured but well integrated. This year’s Durfort is a lovely, happy wine, very much at ease with itself and showing no trauma in spite of the difficult climate. For this 2020 vintage, our aim was to continue in the same vein as 2019, while preserving the typical characteristics of Château Giscours. To achieve this, our objective was to work on two notions that are close to our hearts: aromatic brilliance and fine tannins. The technical team at Giscours took great care to give each plant individual attention. Our vine-growers and winemakers have detailed knowledge of the terroir and the rows they are in charge of, and they consider these plots of vines as micro-gardens that they tend with great care. We are very proud of the 2020 vintage. Our team’s in- depth knowledge of the terroir and their risk-taking have produced a voluptuous wine. It is generous, with great personality. It has all the power and fleshiness of Château Giscours and evokes a taffeta texture with silky tannins. It is a vintage that reflects the meticulous and bold approach that guided our team during this atypical year.

This wine has an extraordinary aromatic finesse, a tannic richness, and a particularly dense and tight-knit texture. The finish is very long, fresh, and lively, a little bit firm but already packed with flavor. Such balance is a brilliant expression of Chateau Margaux's noble terroir. 2006 is a great Château Margaux vintage. Of course, it is not 2005, or 2000; those vintages are exceptional. But it does have both the grace and the purity of the 1996, the so classic freshness of the 2004 and the heady power of the 1986 or the 1995. Such balance is a brilliant expression of Château Margaux’s noble terroir but demands a little patience. We recommend waiting for several more years.

Produced from soils made up of a deep layer of gravel, the wines of Siran are typical of the great Margaux growths. This 2022 vintage of Château Siran has a new label, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Siran rolls out with expressive notes of blackcurrant cordial, preserved plums, and stewed black cherries, followed by suggestions of sauteed herbs and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated and intense, with approachable, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with an herbal lift. Château Siran displays charm when young but is also a wine of very long ageing potential. Wine enthusiasts particularly appreciate the complexity of its aromas that it develops over time
